Advice for all learners regarding Coronavirus

As an educational establishment we are working proactively to ensure that learners and staff are kept up-to-date with the latest information and advice provided by the Government and the NHS.

The current advice is for us to remain open but this is changing daily and we are updating our website and social media channels. We are committed to our duty of care, and we will protect our staff and learners  as our first priority.
We have robust contingency plans in place to minimise the impact to learners and our business should we have significant numbers of staff and/or learners absent from site, or in the event of a closure.

The DfE have launched a new helpline to answer questions about COVID-19 related to education. Staff, parents and young people can contact the helpline by telephone 0800 046 8687 or email DfE.coronavirushelpline@education.gov.uk

What should I be doing about Coronavirus?

At the moment, the only action required is to be aware and follow some sensible precautions.

The symptoms of the virus are:

– a high temperature
– a new, continuous cough

If you have any symptoms, you should follow Government/NHS guidance and notify us as soon as possible. You may be advised to self-isolate (stay at home) for a period of time. You will need to keep us informed and contact your Trainers to organise work for you to complete at home.

Having the above symptoms does not necessarily mean that you have the virus – you should follow Government/NHS guidance. Be aware that the majority of people who get Coronavirus will make a full recovery. The main risk is to people who have other serious health issues or who are otherwise unwell.

More information is available on the NHS website:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

or on the Government website:

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/coronavirus-covid-19-list-of-guidance

In the meantime, everyone should adhere to our protective measures whilst onsite.

Furthermore, please read our Statement to see what control measures we have put in place.

CSF Funding Boost to Construction Skills Village

Northern Regeneration CIC has secured £400,000 from the Construction Skills Fund (CSF) for the Construction Skills Village in Barnsley and Scarborough.

The CSF is funded by the Department for Education and is being delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). The scheme aims to increase the number of people trained in construction, tackle the skills shortage and help build the homes and infrastructure England needs.

Delivery of the CSF programme will take place on Northern Regeneration CIC’s existing on-site training models, the Construction Skills Village, located in Barnsley with Henry Boot Construction on the Glass Works project and Scarborough with Kebbell Homes on the Middle Deepdale development. In addition, the Construction Skills Village works collaboratively with many local partners in Barnsley and Scarborough, which is key to its current success.

The funding is for up to 250 individuals wishing to join the sector from full-time education, those who are currently unemployed, and those wishing to switch careers. Programmes are tailored to individual needs with access to CSCS, plant machinery and accredited short courses to ensure entrants become site and employment ready.

Graham Ratcliffe, Managing Director of Northern Regeneration CIC said:

‘We are extremely pleased to receive the Construction Skills Fund from the DFE and CITB. The funds will allow us to further enhance our current on-site delivery model at the Construction Skills Village. This will provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for individuals to gain industry recognised skills which will support them into a career in construction’

Sarah Beale, Chief Executive of CITB, said:

The Construction Skills Fund can be a genuine game-changer for both the construction industry and the individuals being trained. We have a massive need for homegrown talent and these projects will bring thousands of new people into our sector, giving them the crucial onsite experience they need to start a career in construction. These 26 hubs will be based at some of the most innovative sites in the UK, and CITB will be working hard to make sure they deliver the skills our industry critically needs’

Ryan O’Loughlin, Project Director of Henry Boot Construction, said:

‘I am delighted the Construction Skills Village has successfully secured the Construction Skills Fund. This programme is a fantastic opportunity for both the local communities and construction companies to address the skills shortage’

Mike Mulligan, Director of Kebbell Homes, said:

‘The Construction Skills Fund will further allow the Construction Skills Village to deliver demand led training in construction for the benefit of the industry and local residents’

Barnsley Council Leader Sir Steve Houghton, CBE said:

‘This is fantastic news; the Skills Village in Barnsley has been very successful so far and has had a really positive impact on the lives of those that have taken part in the scheme. It’s a great opportunity for young people to gain the skills they need to progress in the construction industry, so I am delighted to hear that this funding has been secured to enable other individuals to benefit from this excellent scheme’

Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council said:

‘The Construction Skills Village has already made excellent progress in improving the construction skills base in the Scarborough area and the funding provided will allow the scheme to go from strength to strength. This is great news for local workforce development and the area’s economy.”

Scarborough Engineering Week 2018

Scarborough Construction Skills Village was proud to attend its first Scarborough Engineering Week from Tuesday 9th October to Thursday 11th October 2018 at Scarborough Spa.

The Construction Skills Village had a dedicated stand with information on careers in construction as well as a plant simulator to provide visitors with a first-hand experience of working in the industry. Our interactive stand was a huge success, often with queues of visitors wanting a go!

We were honoured to receive Winner of Best Interactive Stand at Scarborough Engineering Week 2018 as voted by this year’s visitors. This was the first year Scarborough Engineering Week has had a dedicated stand for construction and we are delighted to be the first company to showcase the great opportunities in the industry.

Scarborough Construction Skills Village has been successful in securing funding to keep a plant simulator on our site and we hope to have this in the coming months. This is fantastic news for both the Construction Skills Village and the local people of Scarborough who will have access to this innovative piece of technology.

The team look forward to seeing everyone at Scarborough Engineering Week 2019!

Funding Boost to Scarborough Skills Village

The government has awarded £900,000 to Scarborough’s Construction Skills Village.

It’s one of sixteen successful ‘Fast Track’ projects receiving a share of £6million Coastal Communities Fund money to help deliver sustainable growth and jobs across the Great British coast.

The £900,000 grant goes to the Scarborough Construction Skills Village project to help tackle local unemployment and skills challenges. The funding is to support local residents into new apprenticeships and jobs in the construction industry, particularly in micro and small construction companies.

As part of the fifth round of the Coastal Communities Fund, sixteen ‘ready to go’ projects have been selected to start work to transform their coastal communities in 2018-19 before the main round funding becomes available in April 2019.

Coastal Communities Minister, Jake Berry MP, said:

“It’s really exciting to see money from the Coastal Communities Fund help kick start these shovel ready projects, which have the potential to unlock the barriers to development and growth in our coastal communities. Investment in our seaside areas, through projects such as these, will provide nothing short of a New Deal for the Great British coast, creating thousands of jobs, training places and opportunities along the shore.”

Graham Ratcliffe, Managing Director, said:

“We’re ecstatic to receive the funds and it’s going to create some great opportunities for the young people. We’re waiting to get confirmation from Groundwork UK, who are managing the funds, but we anticipate they’ll be in touch this week to let us know when we’ll get the funds, and when we can start our activity in terms of identifying individuals and placing them into apprenticeships with local employers. Without the support of the team here at the Construction Skills Village, this wouldn’t have been achieved. We’ve put in a lot of hard work and a lot of effort in becoming established. We’re a small company and we’ve only been going for three years but we’ve made a major impact in the construction industry in Scarborough. This is just another opportunity to make that impact greater and benefit the whole borough.”

MP Visits Scarborough Construction Skills Village

The Rt Hon Robert Goodwill MP visited Scarborough’s Construction Skills village on Friday 13th August to meet the trainees and team behind the project and discuss the successes that have been achieved so far. To date successes have included:-

Recruiting more than 100 onto post 16 learning provision.
Recruiting 8 under 16’s.
Enabling 62 learners to secure employment or apprenticeships following Skills Village training.

It is hoped that the visit will encourage the MP to support Northern Regeneration in their bid to receive some of the £29m Construction Skills fund which has recently been announced by the Department of Education to assist in easing the industry’s skills shortage. The funding bid is to enhance the current Eastfield facility.

Scarborough Borough Council in partnership with Northern Regeneration has successfully applied for funding to Advantage Coast Community Led Local Development and the York North Yorkshire & East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership, to both extend the skills village site and create a construction business centre on the site of the former High Eastfield Farm.

Scarborough Construction Skills Village was established in August 2015 to assist in overcoming the major skills shortages and gaps in skills provision within the construction industry. Training has begun to ensure that a skilled local workforce is available to build the anticipated 9000 new homes that will be required in the Borough of Scarborough by 2032 and help address some of the issues identified in the recent Government Housing White Paper: ‘Fixing our broken housing market’.

The Construction Skills Village gives people the opportunity to learn and develop the specific skills required for the construction and housing industries by working on a real life construction site under the guidance of expert mentors. In its relatively short existence, the initiative has already produced some real success stories. The site provides a one stop shop for construction and housing employers, learners, parents, adults and referral agents wishing to understand how to access the industry and recruit locally.

Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council said:
“We are delighted that the MP has taken time out of his very busy schedule to come along and have a look at this superb facility. We really hope that the visit will result in increasing awareness of the project and its successes within Westminster and encourage ministers to support any future funding applications for further development”.

Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby said:
“This is just the kind of initiative we need to ensure that local people have the skills needed to take advantage of the jobs, particularly in construction and building that are being created in our area. The country is crying out for skilled people and these should be home grown rather than relying on European Union workers coming here.”

Construction Skills Village To Receive Extra Funding

£400,000 of funding has been approved to expand the Construction Skills Village in Scarborough.

The borough council’s cabinet made the decision on Tuesday 17 July with the view of extending the site at Eastfield.

A Construction Business Centre will be built within the former High Eastfield Farm House. The funding comes from Advantage Coast CLLD and from York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership (YNYER LEP.)

According to the report put before cabinet, once completed the Construction Business Centre will support local construction businesses with a range of packages to help develop their businesses and encourage micro and small businesses to become part of the supply chain for larger organisations

Speaking at cabinet, Councillor Sandra Turner, cabinet member for communities, said:

“The benefits that it brings to our area are absolutely brilliant. We’ve got Sirius coming on board as well and I know they’re working together so we’ve got skilled people ready to move into the jobs that will come on the table.

If you look not too far back, young people in this area found it very difficult to get an apprenticeship with anything.

They had no skills, they wouldn’t be considered. The village has opened up so many opportunities.”

Leader of the borough council Derek Bastiman added:

“I think this move up to High Eastfield Farm and the opportunities that it opens up there are just tremendous for young people and people looking for employment.

So it isn’t just to benefit the people of Eastfield Estate, it’s to benefit the people of the borough and wider area.”

Work is expected to start on the site next month, with a view to being completed by March 2019.
