Keepmoat are pleased to be partners of Northern Regeneration CIC in the, design, and delivery of the Skills Village model. Northern Regeneration have been instrumental in pulling a diverse partnership together, including construction companies, local authorities and training partners in developing this unique provision which we feel fits industry need. Without the support of Northern Regeneration, we feel the concept would not have become reality. Their drive, knowledge and experience in pulling partners together, understanding local needs whilst staying focused on delivering the vision for all partners to benefit has been the key in getting the Skills Village delivering demand led training. From a personal point of view, being able to see future apprentices develop and expand their trade experience in the Skills Village and then watching them being able to go out on site and work on a real life construction site is a major advancement in construction apprenticeship training.
Richard Levin, Partnership Manager

We’re supporting the pledge because it is key that our members, wherever possible, are involved in major projects carried out along the East Coast. This isn’t just limited to pitching for work, ensuring that investment stays within the area but it’s ensuring that students in this area are given every opportunity to realise their potential regardless of what route they take to get there. We believe that the Skills Village and its way of working will be key to students in this area and provide opportunity they wouldn’t have otherwise had.
Richard Askew
East Coast Federation of Small Business
The National Federation of Builders, the longest running trade association within the construction industry, fully endorses the Construction and Housing Employment and Skills Pledge for Scarborough.
There is a significant Skills shortage throughout the North East region with the majority of NFB members struggling to attract experienced staff. It is very positive that the Construction Skills Village is attempting to rectify this serious problem by providing key on-site skills and support to young people, which will substantially help the future of the industry
David Todd, North East Area Manager

Sanctuary Housing Association is happy to sign this pledge to work in partnership with the Construction Skills Village on all our development projects in Scarborough. The Skills Village has developed an extremely successful solution to addressing the construction skills shortage through combining college studies with site based work experience
Cath Jordan, National Project Manager
Sanctuary Housing Association
Yorkshire Coast Homes supports the Construction Housing, Employment and Skills Pledge (CHESP) as we fully recognise the need to build additional affordable housing within the Borough. We also acknowledge the issues faced by the Construction Industry with recruitment and retention and the resulting need to train and develop local talent. We feel that this can most effectively achieved by providing classroom and site based training frameworks that robustly prepare students for work within the sector. In supporting this collaborative strategy, we hope that local employers’ recruitment needs will be met and that we can contribute to a reduction in the construction sector skills gap.
Kevin Bradshaw, Head of Housing
Yorkshire Coast Homes
Willmott Dixon are delighted to sign this skills pledge to work in partnership within the Scarborough area. Supporting the Skills Village model, we feel will offer young people an alternative route which will enable them to progress into roles within Construction & the Built Environment and will expose them to opportunities that can only serve to ensure they are more successful in finding an opportunity within our industry. We are excited to be included in these future developments and look forward to a collaborative working relationship with all partners.

SBC is a keen supporter of the pledge. We recognise the increasing importance of the construction industry to the economic development of Scarborough Borough. We desperately need to increase the capacity for construction training and employment support, to help local people get good, well paid jobs. The Skills Village is well placed to contribute to increasing capacity with an offer that employers want and need, complementing other provision locally and giving local solutions for businesses
Simon Featherstone, Employment and Skills Manager
Scarborough Borough Council
Keepmoat Homes is supporting the pledge because ensuring the succession of our workforce is business critical; being able to identify and support new entrants into the industry is a key strategic driver for communities, clients and the industry
Keepmoat Homes also supports the Skills Village because by providing safe, onsite experience of a real working site the Skills Village has already proven its worth in addressing the skills gap within the new construction worker cohort but with further funding and support the village will undoubtedly contribute to the skills shortage across the whole borough
Richard Coy, Partnership Manager
Keepmoat Homes
I can see that this initiative will make a real difference to the future for these young people. Also with the regeneration plans that we as a council have I hope they will be able to find employment for many many years.
Cllr Helen Mallory
Scarborough Borough Council
The amount of work that everyone has put into it is to be applauded. This is great news for the whole of the borough and after talking to the apprentices/tutors (across the borough) it will turn out to be a great success. Well done everyone.
Cllr. Joe Plant
Scarborough Borough Council
Thought it was an excellent event, really encouraging to see so many key organisations buying into this with such enthusiasm. The highlight being the positive feedback from the students, hopefully this Skills Village will be the first of more to come. All the students I spoke to were really happy to be there, spoke to one young man whose social worker brought him from Whitby to the village returning to bring him home at the end of the day, brilliant opportunities for them. Well done everyone concerned.
Cllr Sandra Turner
Scarborough Borough Council
I fully agree with Cllr Turner. I spoke to a budding chippy who came in by train from Malton. I also spoke to a future brickie who was working with impressive confidence after just two weeks. One comment I would make is that chippies are taught to sharpen chisels at a very early stage. The chisel that the lad I mentioned above was using looked more like a screwdriver. Once sharpened he worked with a different vigour. Overall I am singularly impressed.
Cllr John Nock,
Scarborough Borough Council
I was fortunate to go to the first construction skills village, and was very impressed with it. The enthusiasm and the pride of all was immense, but this one really took it to a different level, and the apprentices were glowing with there comments. This is fantastic for the borough and for all the people who have given there time and there efforts.
Well done all of you, what a credit you are.

Scarborough Borough Council
THE COLLEGES
LOVE US TOO
YH Training Services are proud to be working with Northern Regeneration to improve Construction skills in Scarborough where there is considerable demand for Construction workers as a result of the considerable housing development at Middle Deepdale together with a variety of other construction developments, including the commencement of the building of the Potash mine in 2017. Construction training is available to both young people and adults keen to follow a career in Construction and will commence with short courses and Pre- Apprenticeships with real hands on training and work experience at the Skills Village. This will allow the learners to gain relevant real work skills and through work experience, impress the developers of their ability and keenness to take up a career in Construction which will lead to a number of Apprenticeship opportunities.
Construction represents a fantastic opportunity as the industry is suffering from an ageing workforce, yet there is increasing demand for new houses and other Construction projects, not only in Scarborough & District and across the wider area.
Frank McMahon, Chairman and Managing Director of YH Training Services Ltd

The Skills Village is an exciting and innovative approach bringing education and industry together for the benefit of our students. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain invaluable experience of industry working practices and ensure that, at the end of their course, they are ready for employment. We look forward to welcoming Her Worshipful the Mayor of Barnsley to officially open the Skills Village.

EVEN THE STUDENTS
THINK WE’RE ALRIGHT!
Everyone is really enjoying the experience, it is fantastic to see students on a live site with a real installation and having to work out where everything is, instead of it all being on one board in a college workshop.
Richard, Tutor
I love attending the Skills Village, as it is like you are on a real working site outdoors and can work in all weathers. At college it’s like working in a box.
Ashely, Student
Scarborough Skills Village
In a college we never got to do any work experience. Here I feel like we are getting that chance.

It helps me visualise the end goal of what happens in a house and will make us so much competent at finding real faults in a house.

The Skills Village has been a good experience and I have learnt the practical side of P&D in a site environment.
