On-site training boost to ease skills shortages

A £22m boost for on-site construction training was officially launched on Monday 18th August 2018 in the latest attempt to ease the industry’s skills shortages.

The Construction Skills Fund was first unveiled during Chancellor Philip Hammond’s Spring Statement in March. The £22m injection will help fund 20 “skills villages” where training hubs are set-up alongside live construction sites. The 18-month scheme is funded by the Department for Education and will be administered by the Construction Industry Training Board.

Specialist training provider Construction Skills Villages has been pioneering the on-site model working with contractors and developers.

Managing director Graham Ratcliffe said: “It is great seeing funds being made available to support on-site training through hubs similar to the Construction Skills Villages in Scarborough and Barnsley. We hope to secure funds to expand our unique and successful model in turn helping support the construction industry overcome a skills gap.”

Skills Minister Anne Milton said: “On-site training will be hugely beneficial for employers and trainees, as it will help bridge the gap between training and working in the industry, meaning trainees are site-ready sooner.”

CITB is now calling on employers, housing associations and other interested bodies such as LEPs and local authorities to submit expressions of interest. These can be from both existing and prospective on-site learning hubs.

Steve Radley, Policy Director at CITB, said: “Having training on or near to major projects will reveal what an exciting sector this can be, while also putting new talent in the shop window. We want all interested organisations to submit Expressions of Interest that are innovative, collaborative and with training at their heart. We will support applicants through the process and provide expert guidance to apply to the fund.”

The successful bids will be awarded in the autumn. The Construction Skills Village keep everyone updated on any developments!

Local providers team up to offer construction skills training

The company behind the development of Woodsmith Mine has joined forces with training provider Construction Skills Village and Scarborough Job Centre Plus to support a series of bespoke training and employment programmes aimed at local people.

The scheme is open to people across the Borough of Scarborough and is set to equip school leavers, ex-military personnel and the unemployed with the skills needed to apply for construction operative roles with Sirius Minerals’ contractors, and opportunities in the wider construction industry. It is also open to individuals who would like to develop their existing skill set.

Individuals will work towards an industry recognised qualification in construction operations and will gain a CSCS card, as well as undertaking various practical construction and health and safety training.

Graham Ratcliffe, managing director at Construction Skills Village said: “Our intensive twelve-week general operative style courses will provide individuals with a range of industry skills that will be achieved through a blend of knowledge-based training, real site practical training and work experience, allowing participants to become more ‘job ready’.”

Partners in the scheme include a number of local providers, such as YH Training Services, Scarborough Jobmatch, North Yorkshire County Council, Guy Bentley Groundworks and Kebbell Developments, as well as a number of schools.

Sirius Minerals’ £3bn polyhalite project will involve the construction of the mine near Whitby with a 37km mineral transport tunnel to a processing plant and port at Teesside. It is set to create approximately 2,000 direct and indirect jobs during its construction, as well as training to support 300 local people into roles in preparation for mining operations.

“The company’s workforce will grow significantly in the coming months and years”, said Katie Brigham, recruitment, training and development officer for Sirius Minerals.

“Our contractors require workers with a range of construction skills during the development phase of our project and, where possible, we are committed to recruiting people from the local area. It is our priority to generate an awareness of the careers that we will offer and to help boost the skills and aspirations of people in the area.”

Alternative Provision Success

Scarborough Construction Skills Village has received positive feedback from George Pindar School.

Since 2015 we have worked in partnership with the school to offer construction as part of their curriculum. Take a look at what Julian Leader, Headteacher at George Pindar School said:

‘Since developing our strategic partnership with the Construction Skills Village we have seen a number of positive impacts. We have worked together to provide students with hands on experiences of the construction sector through experiential visits, work experience opportunities and specific placements for students.’

‘These specific placements, providing a day a week for students to work within the Skills Village, have not only provided invaluable experience and training for the student, but have also supported an improvement in their engagement within their core curriculum. Without this strategic link our curriculum and CEIAG opportunities would be narrower’

Start your career at Doncaster Construction Skills Village

Doncaster Construction Skills Village is enrolling learners who are interested in starting a construction career.

The Construction Skills Village is a collaboration between Willmott Dixon, Northern Regeneration and Barnsley College. It provides local people with the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge in order to address the skills shortage and close the gap between education and the construction industry.

Doncaster Construction Skills Village is located on a brand-new site on Middle Bank, Doncaster, and is attached to the XP East development being built by Willmott Dixon, the company behind the newly opened National College of High Speed Rail. As part of the brand-new site, Doncaster Construction Skills Village has had a makeover with new cabins and furniture supplied by Elliott Group Ltd and safety barriers supplied by Speedy Hire.

Students will work towards a Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills on a live site and will develop their skills in a range of construction trades including brickwork, groundworks and joinery. Students will also gain practical skills in project planning, health and safety and cost/time management.

Students will undertake their qualification by completing hands-on projects guided by expert tutors on the Construction Skills Village site. On top of this, Willmott Dixon will support students with industry talks, site tours of the XP East development, work experience opportunities and introductions to their supply chain partners.

This will ensure that students gain theoretical knowledge together with the practical industry experience required to help prepare them for a career in construction; whilst also providing local and regional businesses with a stream of highly talented individuals.

Richard Stowell, Operations Manager at Willmott Dixon, said:

“Skills are the lifeblood of our industry and we are delighted to be involved with the Doncaster Construction Skills Village, which provides a fantastic opportunity to integrate our construction activities with the Barnsley College curriculum and provide an innovative learning opportunity for the students. This project offers Willmott Dixon the vehicle to deliver our commitment towards ‘enhancing the lives of young people’. It is initiatives such as this that provide a vital role in attracting young people into our industry, offering students site based learning and mentoring opportunities.”

Graham Ratcliffe, Managing Director at Northern Regeneration, added:

“We want to support local talent in taking their first steps into the construction industry. Doncaster Construction Skills Village not only provides ‘real life’ training, but also work placement and employment opportunities.”

Barnsley College Principal Chris Webb added:

“The Skills Village is an exciting and innovative approach bringing education and industry together for the benefit of our students. They will gain invaluable practical experience within the construction industry ensuring that they are ready for employment that at the end of their course.”
