Apprenticeship: Tyler McMahon

Tyler-McMahon-Apprenticeship-July-17

Tyler McMahon, 16, has successfully gained an apprenticeship with Scarborough Construction Skills Village partner Guy Bentley Groundworks Ltd.

Tyler joined Scarborough Construction Skills Village in October 2016. At the time, he was a young person Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) after his original apprenticeship did not work out. He had heard about Scarborough Construction Skills Village from his school assemblies at the end of Year 11 at George Pindar School and decided to sign up to our Construction Skills course in the hope it would help him start his career.

Since joining the Construction Skills Village Tyler has gained experience in brickwork, groundworks and Joinery, from which he achieved his Level 1 Extended Certificate in Construction Skills in June 2017.

Tyler decided he wanted to pursue a career in groundworks and in March 2017 Scarborough Construction Skills Village arranged a two-week work experience placement with Kebbell Homes on their Middle Deepdale development. This placement was successful and he was recommended to Guy Bentley Groundworks Ltd. who had an apprenticeship position coming up.

Tyler started his apprenticeship in June 2017 with Guy Bentley Groundworks Ltd. and he has got stuck in with the team from the outset. To date, he has been involved in flagging, block paving, bricklaying, digging trenches and used a range of machinery from wacker plates to rollers.

Tyler will return to Scarborough Construction Skills Village in September 2017, where he will complete his NVQ Level 2 Apprenticeship in General Construction Operations, whilst working at Guy Bentley Groundworks Ltd.

James Dutfield, Foreman at Guy Bentley Groundworks said “Tyler is doing brilliant, he is learning new things every day and he has lots of potential. He is a good lad! So far, he has undertaken various tasks and even had a go on the machinery under supervision”

Tyler McMahon, Apprentice Groundworker at Guy Bentley Groundworks Ltd. said “The Skills Village was good, I learnt a lot and I liked the fact it was hands on and outside – not stuck in a classroom! This apprenticeship is great as I can start paying and doing things for myself. I have a good laugh with the team and I am continually learning.”

Well done Tyler and thank you to our partners Guy Bentley Groundworks Ltd.!
