Construction Plant Operative Apprenticeship

How will I be assessed?

  • 60-minute computer-based knowledge test of 50 questions
  • 7 practical demonstrations over 5 hours and 30 minutes
  • 90-minute interview based on your portfolio of evidence

What will I study:

This apprenticeship will give you the knowledge skills and behaviours required to work as a CPO and will include the following:

  • Operate an excavator 360 according to its intended purpose to carry out working activities according to the contract specifications which will include excavating earth; forming excavations, levelling and shaping ground, forming stockpiles; lifting basic loads; loading vehicles with earth and other materials.
  • Operate a forward tipping dumper according to its intended purpose to carry out working activities according to the contract specifications which will include receiving earth and other loose materials; transport the materials to the discharging area; forming stockpiles of discharged materials; deposit materials into trenches; excavations etc.
  • Operate a ride-on roller according to its intended purpose to carry out working activities according to the contract specifications which will include compacting loose granular materials; bituminous and tarmac-bound materials.
  • Operate a telescopic handler according to its intended purpose to carry out working activities according to the contract specifications which will include retrieving, lifting and placing loads at height using the forks; lifting and placing suspended loads at height and reach; transporting fork-mounted loads and suspended loads across the site.
  • Monitor their work activity, ensure the machine is working safely and efficiently, and make adjustments or alterations as required.
  • Extract and use information from the machine’s operator’s manual, site plans and drawings and verbal communication.

Method of Delivery:

Construction Plant Operative apprentices attend Skills Village for 1 week of block delivery every other month and work for their employer for the rest of the time.

Apprenticeship FAQs

  • Do I have to be 16 to start an apprenticeship?

    Absolutely not! Apprenticeships are available for anyone over the age of 16 and are suitable for school leavers, graduates, career changers later in life and returners to work. In fact, in the 2023/24 academic year, Under-19s account for just 32.7% of apprenticeship starts (42,740).

  • Can I start my apprenticeship at Skills Village without an employer?

    No. For an apprenticeship to start, an employer needs to be secured. You will not be able to do any learning towards the qualification or start with us until you are with an employer.

  • Can Skills Village help me find an employer?

    We can support with helping you look for an employer by undertaking you through our applicant process which will include a 30 minute interview however we cannot guarantee a placement to anyone due to the sheer number of candidates we are working with.

  • I’m an employer who has never had an apprentice, is it hard to set up?

    We pride ourselves on guiding employers through the apprenticeship set up process to help them and make it as easy as possible and assisting with as much as we can.

  • When can I start an apprenticeship?

    We start apprenticeships each month rather than the traditional September only intake.

  • What GCSE’s do I need to start an apprenticeship?

    If you are wanting to start an Electrical apprenticeship, we require you have a minimum of a grade 5/B in Mathematics and a grade 4/C in English. If you are applying for any of the other apprenticeships (at Level 2) and you do not have a minimum of grade 4/C in English and Mathematics then you will then study this in the form of Functional Skills. All apprenticeships are subject to initial assessments undertaken at Learner Vetting.
