Apprenticeship: Rudi Brown

Rudi Brown has successfully gained an apprenticeship with Scarborough Construction Skills Village partners Kebbell Homes.

In September 2017 Rudi, aged 27, applied to the Construction Skills Village to complete a full-time study programme. He had heard about the training opportunities at the Construction Skills Village through Scarborough Jobmatch. This was a very difficult decision for Rudi to make as he had sole custody of two young children and he was dependent of Benefits to support his young family. Yet, Rudi recognised the importance of gaining a qualification and he was desperate to gain an apprenticeship to progress his career and help support his young family.

Rudi applied to the Construction Skills Village and he was registered on a full-time study programme in Trowel Occupations.

After showing his commitment at the Construction Skills Village it soon became clear that Rudi was very hard working and an extremely employable individual. Therefore, when a traineeship opportunity became available with Kebbell Homes, Rudi was immediately put forward by the Construction Skills Village team.

Rudi started his traineeship on the 20th November 2017 and completed 6 weeks of unpaid work experience.

During the traineeship, Rudi could not afford additional childcare costs to support his young family and as a result, Kebbell Homes agreed to be flexible and work with Rudi’s circumstances and agreed a flexible working pattern to work alongside childcare commitments.

Due to Rudi’s hard work and commitment on site, he was offered an apprenticeship with Kebbell Homes on the 8th January 2018.

Rudi is now working towards an NVQ Level 2 Apprenticeship in Trowel Occupations and he attends Scarborough Construction Skills Village one day a week.

  • Attending the Construction Skills Village was life changing for me. The team were so supportive and helpful and fully understood my reasons for needing, not only full time employment but most importantly a qualification and career for life. They helped me progress as a bricklayer and got me into a paid apprenticeship within 6 weeks of me starting my traineeship. This was really quick which was good for me as it’s helped me get a proper income for me and my kids. I now have a future to look forward to and will work hard to become a fully qualified bricklayer.

  • Sometimes people just need to be provided with an opportunity. At Kebbell Homes we recognised the difficulties which Rudi faced in order for him to gain employment and therefore we provided him with a flexible approach to the working day. Rudi worked hard on his traineeship and we are very proud to provide him with this apprenticeship and welcome him as a new member of the team to Kebbell Homes.
