BBC News – Coastal Britain

We took part in the BBC News Coastal Britain project yesterday – interviewed by Martine Croxall live on the BBC!

Melissa Gallimore, our Operations Manager, Adam Hutchinson, Carpentry Apprentice at Watson Construction and Martin Waller, Quality and Curriculum Manager talked about the important role the team at Construction Skills Village play in providing our coastal town with career opportunities for young people and the importance of building a stronger local economy.

Martin spoke about the need to train more tradespeople in green skills and sustainable building technologies – essential as the government has laid plans for a green revolution in house building  where all new homes will be required to be highly energy efficient, with low carbon heating, and be net zero carbon by 2050.

Two new energy efficient prototype homes are to be built by SoHoCo Developments at the Eastfield site later in the year and will provide a great example of the technologies needed and the skills required for the future workforce.

The piece also called out to local construction companies who are interested in taking on an apprentice to get in touch as there are learners waiting to join the apprenticeship programme.

“This is nothing like college!”

What a great day at Construction Skills Village Open Day for School Leavers yesterday. We welcomed 34 young people to our site – all were interested in finding out about career opportunities in construction. The engagement with the tutors was amazing and the feedback fantastic!

“This is amazing, I can’t believe this is here”

“This is so much better than what they have in Bradford”

“This is nothing like college”

Our visitors had some hands-on experience in the joinery workshop making planters and phone holders and learnt about the courses on offer to them: Groundworks, Brickwork, Joinery, Plastering, Plumbing and Electrics.

Employment Engagement Officer Kim Jackson was pleased with the feedback. “It was great to see so many young people engaged with the tutors and keen to know what apprenticeships we have here. We have a lot of local employers – in all areas of construction – looking to take on an apprentice. It’s an exciting time to learn a trade – there is so much demand at the moment and some great opportunities for young people.”

Council Leader and MP visit CSV

The team at Construction Skills Village welcomed Steve Siddons, Council Leader of  Scarborough Borough Council this morning.

Councillor Siddons toured the facilities and learnt about the expansion taking place at High Eastfield Farm, partly funded by the recent Town Deal.

£535,000 has been allocated to CSV from the Scarborough Town Deal to support the development of construction apprenticeships, groundworks, building, joinery, plastering and two new courses, domestic plumbing and electrics, which will be offered from September.

Graham Ratcliffe, MD at Northern Regeneration CIC, thanked the Council Leader. “This visit was a great opportunity to show Councillor Siddons how we are providing life-changing opportunities for young people along the Yorkshire Coast and helping to fill the growing skills gap in the construction sector. Our hands-on learning in a real site environment is a fantastic start for anyone wanting a career in construction and we thank the Council, CLLD and North Yorkshire LEP for their continued support.”

Later in the day Robert Goodwill MP who took a tour of the facilities and then met with past CSV apprentice, Lewis Watherstone. Lewis now runs his own successful joinery business L. W. Joinery and has taken on his own CSV apprentice, Mitchell Coles.

Graham explains “Apprenticeships are fundamental to providing much needed skills in the UK. It’s fantastic to see Lewis doing so well and now taking on his own apprentice. It’s what we’re all about at CSV! Mr Goodwill has always shown a great interest in our work, and I was delighted to be able to introduce him to apprentices – both past and present – and thank him for his continued support.”

Both visitors were also shown around CSV Training which provides a range of industry-recognised qualifications in Health and Safety and Plant machinery and  learnt about the plans to train apprentices in green construction methods and reskill tradespeople in the technologies that will be needed to meet the green skills agenda in home building.

Later in the year SoHoCo Developments will be building two prototype smart, low carbon homes at the site, which will enable new and future apprentices and tradespeople to develop new and demand led skills to help, the UK meet the carbon neutral challenges.

CSV Training Passes CITB Site Safety Plus Training Organisation Audit.

CSV Training has passed the CITB Site Safety Plus Training Organisation Audit. Scarborough based construction training company, CSV Training, has been an ATO for CITB for 2 years. The audit was completed with no further actions required.

Fiona Ratcliffe, MD at CSV Training is delighted with the outcome. “CITB approval is important as it shows employers in the construction industry that our training courses, tutors, site and quality management system meet the highest standards. We don’t cut corners – we just deliver great training.

“This was the first virtual audit we’ve taken – but I’m pleased to report that no remedial actions are needed, and we passed with flying colours.”

In addition to CITB Site Safety Plus courses CSV Training is also an accredited centre for NPORS and is a sister company to the Construction Skills Village.

Plumbing and Heating Apprenticeships from September

Construction Skills Village is launching two new construction apprenticeships in September, Electrical Installations and Domestic Plumbing.

The two new apprenticeships compliment the established programmes: Groundworks, Bricklaying, Joinery and Plastering.

Electrical apprentices will learn how to install, maintain and repair electrical systems in industrial, commercial and domestic environments and safe working practices.

Plumbing and heating learners will be taught how to plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems.

There is also a Drylining apprenticeship beginning in January 2022. The drylining learners will be part of a fast-growing sector, learning new-build refurbishment, including the construction of partitions, walls and ceilings for renovating hotels, schools, football stadiums, hospitals and more.

Celebration for construction skills village team and apprentices

Staff and apprentices at Scarborough Construction Skills Village are celebrating a positive Ofsted monitoring report.

The main findings record “reasonable progress” in all three key sections for the learners and apprentices and considering the effects of covid on construction training.

“Leaders and managers have designed and implemented vocational programmes that meet the requirements of successful apprenticeship provision,” says the final monitoring report, just released.

It adds: “Leaders and managers support social inclusion and successfully raise the aspirations of unemployed adults and young people who are not in education, employment or training.

“They develop learners’ skills and instil in them positive workplace behaviours before matching them to apprenticeship opportunities with local employers.”

At the time of the visit last month, there were:

6 learning plastering

50 general construction apprentices

13 on carpentry and joinery courses

7 groundworkers on tuition

18 apprentices on bricklaying programmes

6 studying property maintenance

“Reasonable progress” was the finding in the main themes as summarised by Ofsted – on meeting the requirements of successful apprenticeship provision, high-quality training with positive outcomes for apprentices and on safeguarding.

Under the phased return of inspections from the heights of the covid impact, Ofsted is conducting ‘New Provider Monitoring Visits’.

Its report defines reasonable progress as “actions that are already having a beneficial impact on learners, and that improvements are sustainable and based on the provider’s thorough quality assurance procedures”.

The Ofsted inspector said: “Tutors are suitably qualified and skilled for their roles.

“They share their knowledge of the industry successfully so that apprentices learn new ways of doing things at work.”
The report added: “Tutors ensure that employers are fully involved in apprentices’ on and off-the-job training.”

Work with employers to identify clearly and agree the knowledge, skills and behaviours that apprentices need to develop was also highlighted.

It says: “Leaders have appropriate governance arrangements in place to provide challenge
and scrutiny.

“Board members have extensive experience in construction and in the field of employment and skills. They use their knowledge and experience well to ensure that the curriculum effectively meets local and regional needs.”

The report did, however, say that more action was needed “for a few apprentices” who were making slower progress in technical English and mathematics skills for examinations.

It also called for more constructive feedback by tutors on apprentices’ written work or in reviews – for more precise knowledge, skills and behaviours that apprentices need to develop.

There was praise though that “employers value the support that tutors provide to ensure apprentices develop the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours” and that they learn how to use tools “proficiently and build brick walls correctly.

“Tutors plan learning activities effectively and adapt the curriculum in response to apprentices’ needs. On carpentry and joinery programmes, tutors set increasingly challenging activities as apprentices complete their work. As a result, apprentices increase their knowledge of mitred joints and develop their skills in creating them.”

The skills village was set up six years ago and recently added plumbing, heating, electrical and interior building courses to its wide range of construction training.

It is also introducing green construction techniques and methodologies.

Graham Ratcliffe, head of Northern Regeneration which runs the skills village at High Eastfield Farm, said: “We are extremely pleased.

“It has been a challenging time for staff and our tutors, for our dedicated learners and apprentices and for our supportive construction and trades employers.

“To receive such an overall positive inspection is very welcome and highly encouraging, and we take on board any points where we can get better.

“I am proud of the learners and the tutors who have achieved such an outcome while learning skills that are so vital and in such short supply for the region.” Open days and tours takes place at the skills village on Thursday July 8 and Tuesday 24th August with hands-on taster sessions. Pre-booking is advised.

Opportunities to help build a greener future

New opportunities for more skill-based careers have been unveiled by Scarborough Construction Skills Village as it continues to expand.

Alongside a range of green construction techniques, training courses are starting for the next generation of skilled plumbers, heating engineers, electricians and interior builders.

The new, larger skills village site at High Eastfield Farm, near Musham Bank off the A64, is creating a Green Oak Business Centre, Student Hub, Green Energy Training and Plant Training Space, with a community cafe and rentable units for new enterprises. Work has already started.

It will host two open days on Thursday July 8 and Tuesday August 24 to provide hands-on experience and taster sessions in the full range of construction trades, including joinery, bricklaying, groundworks and plastering, with a tour that shows the scale of development.

Also to be built are two carbon-neutral green showhomes – and a tree will be planted for every new apprentice.

“We have brilliant opportunities from people of all ages and background to learn construction skills in Scarborough,” said Graham Ratcliffe, head of Northern Regeneration which runs the skills village.

“Thousands of new construction workers are needed to support the post-pandemic levelling up agenda and good growth.

“With new technology and green methodology, the construction industry is changing fast and needs to attract people who want to help build a new future for themselves and their community.”

The new plumbing, heating, electrical and interior building courses to national standards are:

• Level 3 Installation electrician and maintenance electrician / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (starting September, aiming for 12 apprentices)

• Level 3 Plumbing and domestic heating technician / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (starting September, aiming for 12 apprentices)

• Level 2 Drylining Systems Interior systems installer / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (starting January 2022, aiming for 12 apprentices)

Electrical apprentices will learn how to install, maintain and repair electrical systems in industrial, commercial and domestic environments and safe working practices.

Plumbing and heating learners will be taught how to plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems.

The drylining learners will be part of a fast-growing sector, learning new-build refurbishment, including the construction of partitions, walls and ceilings for renovating hotels, schools, football stadiums, hospitals and more.

Plant training qualifications and health and safety courses are also major aspects of the operation.

Over the next four years the Yorkshire and Humberside region will need 19,000 new construction workers.

Mr Ratcliffe said: “I would like to thank Robert Goodwill MP for his support and also the Scarborough Town Deal board which has allocated £535,000 to help us develop two prototype low carbon homes and train apprentices in green construction methods.”

The open days and skills village tour at High Eastfield Farm YO11 3PP on July 8 and August 24 will run from 10am to noon and 1pm to 3pm.

Experienced trades people ready to pass on skills and knowledge in joinery, bricklaying, groundworks, plastering, drylining, plumbing or electrical are also required as assessors and trainers.

The skills village is looking to engage with employers who want to take on apprentices, with help and advice available.
